It’s surprising how many new puppy owners do not do any research on lab puppy training and wonder why their puppies are not well behaved, so thank you for taking the time to read this.

Most new Labrador puppy owners start making mistakes before the puppy even comes home. The first thing on your list when getting a new puppy is to be prepared. Think of a puppy like a baby, would you bring a baby home without preparing for it, the answer would be “no”, so start preparing now.

Firstly decided what rooms your puppy will be allowed into, and make them puppy proof. The easy way to do this is get on all fours and look at the room from your puppies’ perspective.

Make sure there are no low hanging wires, toys or shoes put them away and any cleaning products must be put some where safe so puppy can’t get to them.

Then you need to buy your puppy equipment firstly you must decide if your lab puppy will be sleeping in a lab puppy crate/ Lab Puppy cage or a dog bed. If you want to make your puppy training easy then I would go for the Lab puppy crate or cage every time. Then you need, dog bowls, dog blanket, dog food, dog toys, collar and lead.

Now you are prepared you need to get organised with your Labrador Training Puppy. The first thing that most new pet owners will want to sort out is there dogs toilet training. This is probably the most stressful thing to sort out. If your puppy has an accident you must remember it’s your fault not your puppies. You need to keep an eye on him, at all times. Take him outside after sleeping, eating and if he starts to circle and sniff take him outside. Never shout at him if he has an accident, or rub his nose in it, it won’t help.

As soon as puppy comes home start using his name, you will find he will follow you around everywhere you go for the first few days, so keep crouching down call his name and say “come” and give him lots of praise. If you start this from day one your puppy training recall will be some much easier.

Next you will have to train him to settle at night, take my advice please and buy a puppy crate or cage, you might think it’s cruel but for your puppies safety and your sanity will thank you for it. Your new lab puppy will feel safe and secure and you will get a much better sleep knowing your puppy will not be getting into any trouble. To make this place safe and warm, put a puppy blanket in his puppy crate or cage, a toy and put an old duvet cover or blanket over the top to make it dark like a den for him to sleep in. To get him used to this open the door call him and throw a toy into the crate, when he goes in give him lots of fuss and a treat, play with him in the crate for a few minutes and then let him out. Do this a few times for your new puppy to get used it. When your puppy is getting tired take him to his lab puppy crate do the same again but this time shut the door. Your puppy might make a fuss but ignore him, stay in the room but just ignore him and whatever you do don’t let him out. When your puppy wakes up let him out of the cage and straight outside, this way you will have less puddles and your puppy will start to learn very quickly that he needs to go outside to relive himself not on the kitchen floor.

When you get your puppy you need to have a routine. If you have a routine you will find that your Lab Puppy Training is a lot easier.

Your dogs toilet training is all about routine, if you abide by the rules your toilet training will be easier. So after a sleep, after food and in between those times, watch for the signs. The signs that your new Labrador puppy needs to go outside are sniffing and moving in a circle.

As soon as you see this happening, take him outside. If an accident does happen just ignore it, don’t get angry, I know it’s hard but if you ignore it ,but make a huge fuss of your puppy when he gets it right he will soon get the message. When a friend of mine was starting to toilet train her dog and it wasn’t going well she was very frustrated and after the 3rd wee of the day and it was only 10.30am she shouted at her puppy, I then pointed out to her that if she was changing a babies nappy and 2 minutes later she had to change it again would she shout at it, and the answer was no.

A puppy is a baby and if he has an accident it is your fault for not keeping a close eye. Never shout at your puppy for making a mess he will have no idea why you are angry, as I said before praise him with a treat when he gets it right and he will soon learn.

As I said before training your Labrador puppy is all about routine and consistency. When you call him to you always use the command “your puppies name come”.

When you take him outside always use the same command for him to relive himself, I always used “busy”.

When you put him to bed at night always keep the routine the same, take him outside, wait until he relieves himself, have a quick game, settle him into his sleeping quarters, cover his puppy crate or cage turn of the light and go to bed. Once he is tucked up for the night remember if he makes a fuss never go back, leave him until the morning. If you give in you won’t get a good night sleep for a long time. You have been warned.
